Hi Tierra- I'm sorry it has taken me so very long to get back to your comment. My best suggestion to getting into mules is to find a mule farm and see if you can spend some time with them first.
They're not hard to ride or work with per se- I went into some detail on one of the posts on my blog- you just have to respect them for what they are.
The walking mules I've seen are quite nice, just make sure you're buying from a good trainer/barn and the feller is happy, same precautions you'd take with a horse.
